Cranbrook bursts to life during Sam Steele Days

Cranbrook’s biggest party of the year gets rolling tomorrow morning (June 19) with the 50th annual Sam Steele Days Kickoff Pancake Breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. at Tamarack Mall.

From 1 to 2:30 p.m. the Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce is planting a a large snapshot of history of the town during the Community Time Capsule Dedication at the chamber office. Filled with items and comments from residents and businesses, the time capsule will be opened on the 75th celebration of Sam Steele Days in 2039. All residents are invited to attend the dedication and sealing of the time capsule.

SSDBocceBagLadiesIntrinsic to Sam Steele Days, June 19-22, are the sports tourneys and competitions.

The EKVC Beach Volleyball Tournament runs Thursday to Saturday at College of the Rockies; the Sam Steele Ball Tournament, with 74 teams, begins Friday and ends, likely late, on Sunday, at the Kinsmen Quads and Moir Park; and EKC’s KEYSA Soccer Tournament is Saturday and Sunday at Moir Park.

Baker Park comes alive with the Balls of Steele Bocce Tournament, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday.

SSDWeiners3Fitness Inc.’s annual Strongman Competition gets underway Saturday at noon until about 4:30 p.m. on 10th Avenue and 1st Street.

Starting at 1 p.m. in front of the Paw Shop is the always-hilarious Weiner Dog Races and from 1 to 3:30 p.m. in front of Dewey’s Pub is the Server Races.

Also Saturday is the Sam Steele Days Disc Golf Tournament, 5:30-10 p.m. at the COTR course.

SSDP69A highlight of the weekend festivities is the crowning of the Sam Steele Princess and Sweetheart following the pageant at Key City Theatre, Friday evening from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.

It ain’t just sports filling up the events calendar this weekend in Cranbrook, especially the jam-packed Saturday with a plethora of events and activities taking place.

SSDSundayFair6The annual St. Eugene Golf Resort and Casino Parade gets marching at 10:30 a.m. in downtown Cranbrook, following the Pride of Cranbrook Pancake Breakfast (in front of Nutters on Baker Street) and then things get smokin’.

Don’t forget to head back to Rotary Park on Sunday for the Salvador Sunday in the Park, including the Kiddies’ Parade at 11:30 a.m. and Sam Steele Days Mustache Competition at 1 p.m.
