Kimberley Plein Air 2013 Youth Scholarships announced

Four scholarships have been created to encourage artistic Columbia Basin youth to discover the joy and challenges of painting from nature in our local scenic environment.

The Kimberley Arts Council presents ‘Plein Air 2013’, a festival of outdoor painting, this summer from July 31 through to August 10. Scholarships covering tuition for outdoor painting workshops are available for youth aged 16 to 24 years. Last day for submitting applications is May 31. For more details call Centre64 at: 250-427-4919 or go to: www.kimberleyarts.com

The Kimberley Arts Council/Centre 64 is volunteer-run, not-for-profit society mandated to enrich the cultural scene for all members of our community and beyond.

Plein air (outdoor) painting is a quick-painting approach that captures the light and mood of a location during a moment in time. This approach to landscape painting was advanced by the French Impressionists and continues to be a challenging and satisfying way in which to engage with the beauty of nature.

Kimberley Plein Air 2013 includes:

– three-day outdoor watercolour sketching and hiking journal workshop with Sharon Lynn Williams (July 31-Aug.2);

– four-day outdoor oil/acrylic workshop with Jerry Markham (Aug. 6-9);

– Four Youth Scholarships (tuition only): two scholarships for the watercolour workshop and two scholarships for the oil/acrylic workshop;

– Saturday, August 10:  Paint-Out on the Platzl invites artists of all abilities to paint “en plein air” on the Kimberley walking streets between 9 a.m. and noon. From 1 to 4 p.m., the completed paintings will be on exhibit and available for bid in a silent auction. The public is invited to see the artists at work!

Kimberley Arts Council wishes to create opportunities for younger artists to broaden their artistic horizons, build technical expertise and make social connections with the wider regional arts community.

The website www.kimberleyarts.com contains Scholarship Guidelines and Application Forms under the Programs pull down menu, go to the Plein Air 2013 tab.

Applicants are asked to complete an information sheet, write a 500-word essay and submit three to five examples of their artwork as jpgs or print photos.
