City and RCMP seek leads to suspicious fire

Elk Valley RCMP and the City of Fernie are asking the public for help in finding out more about a suspicious fire August 7.

At approximately 6:57 a.m. Thursday, Fernie Fire Rescue received a call for a structure fire at 742 3rd Avenue. Two trucks responded with five career staff and five auxiliary staff. Upon arrival there was smoke showing with minimal flame. A hose line was advanced and extinguishment was started.

Three occupants were in the residence but they were able to exit the residence without injury.

Damage to the structure was kept to a minimum and there were no civilian or fire fighter injuries. RCMP, BCAS and BC Hydro responded to assist firefighters.

With the cooperation of Fernie Fire Rescue, the RCMP are currently conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. Anyone with any information is asked to please contact the RCMP at 250-423-4404 or Chief Ted Ruiter at 250-423-4226.
