Policing priorities in Elkford

RCMP Staff Sgt. Lorne Craig attended the District of Elkford’s Committee of the Whole meeting on March 26 to discuss the policing priorities in Elkford.

The following policing priorities were identified by council: Drugs and alcohol; Traffic violations: speeding; illegal use of off-road vehicles; drinking and driving; dangerous driving of the logging trucks; Police presence; School visits including canine presentations.

Staff Sgt. Craig will discuss these priorities with the RCMP staff and report back.

BC Mayors’ Caucus inaugural meeting

Mayor Dean McKerracher will represent the District of Elkford at the BC Mayors’ Caucus Inaugural Meeting.  All British Columbia Mayors have been invited to Penticton to discuss public policy on matters that affect their communities.  This type of meeting has not occurred formally in BC before, but is based on similar national and international groups.

Cities Fit for Children Provincial Summit

Council approved attendance of one District of Elkford representative at the Summit.  The Elkford Early Childhood Development Committee (EECDC) will also be sending one representative to the Summit.  The purpose of the summit is to emphasize the role of local partnerships, strategies and successes that contribute to livable and healthy cities for children and youth.

Canadian Home Builders’ Association (CHBA) Rocky Mountain Speaker luncheon

Councillor Zarowny will attend the luncheon in Cranbrook that will showcase the technology used for the construction of the Elkford Community Centre.

Community Sustainability Planning and Rural BC Research Focus Group Session

The Fraser Basin Council’s Smart Planning for Communities Program (SPC) is conducting research focused on the successful sustainability planning processes and the types of strategies that are suitable for rural areas and small municipalities in BC.  Last fall SPC conducted an online survey with local governments and the focus group sessions are the next step in the project.  The session will be held in Cranbrook and will be attended by Councillor Zarowny.

91st Annual Mine Rescue and First Aid Competitions

The Mine Rescue Competitions will be held on May 12, 2012 at the new Elkford Fire Training Facility.  Mayor McKerracher will attend the event and the awards banquet in Fernie.

Emergency Management BC Workshop

Council members will attend the workshop in Cranbrook on May 17.  The purpose of the workshop is to understand the responsibility of effective emergency management and to learn more about the importance of emergency planning and building regional connections.

Development Permit #12-01, 404 Boivin Road

The District of Elkford approved issuance of a Development Permit for the construction of the Post Office building at 404 Boivin Road. The application was reviewed for compliance with the guidelines of the Official Community Plan.  The building will include design elements that provide alpine characteristics, public spaces, parking, snow storage and landscaping.
