Proud of my record

By David Wilks,

Kootenay-Columbia Conservative Party of Canada candidate

davidwilksofficialOver the past 4.5 years my offices in Ottawa and Cranbrook have handled over 7,000 requests for assistance on a variety of issues from constituents and others. I take every request seriously and my office deals with to the very best of our ability.

Some issues have been very serious, like Kootenay residents with missing passports, stranded thousands of kilometres from home, or missing pension cheques.

Some less serious like in 2012 when Mr. (Wayne) Stetski contacted Justin Trudeau asking for a meeting, Mr. Trudeauā€™s office asked us to make the arrangements. Mr. Stetski expressed his gratitude for our action.

Last month Canfor announced the closure of the Canal Flats sawmill. Upon hearing the news I immediately called the Federal Employment and Development office. Within days the federal team responsible for employment transition was on the ground in Canal Flats assisting employees of the Canfor Mill.

Cranbrook Mayor Lee Pratt said. ā€œIn his first term as Member of Parliament David worked diligently with the Province, Regional Districts, and Municipalities identifying opportunities to bring government services to Kootenay Columbia residents.ā€

As an advocate for Kootenay Columbia, in 2015 alone, I was pleased to announce Conservative government funding for Columbia Basin Broadband internet coverage, six water and waste water projects under the Build Canada Fund, four Canadian Heritage museum upgrades, New Horizons funding for seniors elevators in every community, Canada 150 funding for seven community projects, and Affordable Housing Projects in seven communities thought out the riding.

As a result of a heinous criminal act that occurred in Sparwood I took action and wrote a ā€˜Private Memberā€™s Billā€™ to make criminals accountable. My law imposes a minimum penalty of five years imprisonment on those convicted of kidnapping a child.

I believe the protection of children across Canada is paramount.

Peter McKay, Attorney General of Canada said, ā€œI have high esteem for David and his tireless efforts on behalf of his constituents and all Canadians.ā€

ā€œDavid makes a significant contribution to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights. However, whatā€™s really remarkable is Davidā€™s private members bill that enables protection of children across Canada,ā€ he said.Ā ā€œItā€™s outstanding that for a private memberā€™s bill to pass, but almost unheard of to achieve that in the first term of a Member of Parliament.”
