RDEK Board Highlights

RDEKWallThe following is a breakdown as to what occurred during the Nov. 7 Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) board of directors’ meeting held in Cranbrook.

2015 board meeting dates announced

The RDEK Board of Directors will be: January 9; February 6; March 6; April 10; May 1; May 29; June 26; August 7; September 4; October 2; November 6; December 4.

Seeking funding extension for Windermere water

RDEK WindermereThe RDEK will apply to the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development regarding the approved Building Canada Fund grant for Windermere water upgrades for a one-year extension to March 31, 2016 and a scope change to include reservoir construction.

The board approved the reallocation of the Community Works Funds to the new reservoir expansion project. The one-year extension would provide the required time to construct a new reservoir, which would provide additional capacity for the water system.

The new reservoir will be required no matter what option is presented to the community regarding the Windermere Water Upgrade.

Electoral Area A Director Mike Sosnowski has been appointed as the RDEK representative on the proposed Baldy Ridge Extension Project Environmental Assessment Working Group and the proposed Coal Mountain Phase 2 Project Environmental Assessment Working Group.

Appointment to Plan Monitoring Advisory Committee

Joe Tress has been appointed to serve on the RDEK Plan Monitoring Committee. The PMAC is an advisory committee of the RDEK, which makes recommendations to the Board of Directors on matters involving the monitoring and implementation of the RDEK Solid Waste Management Plan. The PMAC acts in an advisory capacity only.

Letter of recognition to be sent

A letter of recognition will be sent to Gerry Leudy, President of Motion Steel for his generosity and assistance in the provision of the Rosen Lake Dam outlet screen. Mr. Leudy offered to supply the materials, fabrication, delivery and installation of the screen, as a donation to the Rosen Lake Dam Service Area. His kindness saved the small service area almost $5,000.

Rushmere Utility Advisory Commission appointments

Ken MacRitchie, Arist Bruemmer, Bruce Shand, Stewart Zarowny, and Byron Schmidt have been reappointed as members of the Rushmere Utility Advisory Commission for a two-year term.

West Fernie Servicing & Restructure Project moves forward


WestFernieIn July, the West Fernie community successfully petitioned to move forward with the West Fernie Servicing & Restructure Project. The City of Fernie’s assent for the boundary extension to include West Fernie was accepted by council in mid-October and is currently being reviewed by the province. The next step in the process will be to engage an engineering consultant. Due to the size and scope of the project, the RDEK Board has approved using a Request for Qualifications followed by a Qualifications Based Selection Process to select the engineering consultant for Phase 1 of the project. The project is expected to span three years, one year for design and approvals and up to two years for construction.

Directors appointed to Theatre Committee

Electoral Area C Director and board chair Rob Gay and Electoral Area E Director Jane Walter have been appointed to a committee that is in development to focus on the replacement of Key City Theatre.

Landfill Scale Operations Contract

The five-year contract for the operation of the Columbia Valley Landfill Scale has been awarded to Robert Speta, DBA Sparkling Creek Silvaculture.

Discretionary Grants in Aid (DGIA)

RDEK BaynesLakeFDThe Baynes Lake Volunteer Fire Department Society will receive $1,800 from the Electoral Area B DGIA account for a security system at the fire hall.

The Cranbrook Skating Club will receive $1,500 from the Electoral Area C DGIA account to go towards the 2014/2015 East Kootenay Invitational Tournament costs.

The Royal Canadian Legion Windermere District Branch #71 will receive $75 from the Electoral Area F DGIA account for the Poppy Campaign.

The Fairmont and District Lions Club will receive $2,000 from the Electoral Area F DGIA account for the Wilder Memorial Park Development Plan.

The Columbia Cultural Tourism Association will receive $2,000 from the Electoral Area F DGIA account and $750 from the Electoral Area G DGIA account to help costs of implementing its Tourism Strategy.

Election info

Just a reminder to get out and vote during the upcoming general local elections.

General voting will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, November 15.

In addition, electors in Electoral Area B, C and F will vote for their School Trustee(s). Eligible electors in Elko will also vote on a proposal for fire protection service.
