Wasa RV update — Bylaw 2381 adopted

The Regional District of East Kootenay board of directors Oct. 5 adopted Bylaw 2381, amending the Wasa and Area Land Use Bylaw to permit up to two recreational vehicles to be placed on residential property surrounding Wasa Lake. Any RVs placed on residential property in Wasa must be sited in accordance with the setback requirements of the Bylaw and at least one RV must be registered to the owner of the parcel upon which it is located.

New Columbia Valley Dog Control Officer and pound facilities

The chair and chief administrative officer (CAO) have been authorized to sign a five-year contract with Damien Richard for the Columbia Valley Dog Control Officer services. Meantime, the Columbia Valley Pound Facilities Contract has been awarded to the District of Invermere for a total price of $62,450, excluding HST.

Projects resubmitted to Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund Program

Wycliffe is now closed for the season.

The board agreed that the following projects will be resubmitted in the second call for applications by the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund if they are not successful in the first intake.

– Crossroads ballpark improvements;

– Edgewater Community Ballpark improvements; and

– Wycliffe Regional Park and Exhibition Grounds improvements.

Discretionary Grants In Aid (DGIA)

The Royal Canadian Legion will receive $45 from the Electoral Area A DGIA account for the Sparwood Poppy Campaign and $45 from the same account for the Fernie Campaign.

The Summit Community Service Society will receive $2,000 from the Electoral Area C DGIA account to help the Police Based Victim Services Program. In addition, the Cranbrook & District Arts Council will receive $1,000 from the Electoral Area C DGIA account to assist with 2012 Community Programming.

Windermere Creek Assessment contract awarded

The Windermere Creek assessment contract has been awarded to Northwest Hydraulics Ltd. for a total price of $24,400, excluding HST. The balance of the funding for the assessment will be raised through Discretionary Grant in Aid up to a maximum of $6,000.

Wilmer water project goes to petition

Preparations are underway to move forward with upgrades to the Wilmer Water System. The Ministry of Community,  Sport, and Cultural Development has been requested to reallocate a total of $1.298 million in funding for the project, and at its October Meeting, the RDEK board approved $350,000 in Community Works funds for the upgrade. A petition process will be used to seek elector assent for the establishment of a service to upgrade the Wilmer water system.

Request for St. Mary Lake Road Repairs

A letter will be sent to the City of Kimberley requesting repairs to the portion of St. Mary Lake Road within the city limits and placement of stop signs at the new subdivision between the Kimberley Golf Club and Kimberley Riverside Campground.

In support of Community Forest

The Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations will be sent a letter expressing continued support for the Columbia Headwaters Community Forest and requesting the allocation of timber supply to the Community Forest be expedited.

Brenner Road re-Alignment

The chair and CAO have been authorized to sign the Letter of Agreement with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure for upgrades to Highway 3 at the entrance to the Fernie Transfer Station.

Agricultural Plan open houses

You are invited to come and talk with Dave Struthers, agricultural consultant, about agriculture in the East Kootenay. He will lead the open houses, share information about the land use inventory, and discuss the future of agriculture in our region.

Thursday, October 25 and Monday, October 29, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Wasa Community Hall Wycliffe Exhibition Grounds, 6145 Wasa School Road 5325 Staples Road Wasa.

Monday, November 5 and- Wednesday, November 7, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Hosmer Community Centre and Jaffray Community Hall.

Attention: Windermere Water valve replacement project

Windermere Water users were affected by a community-wide shutdown on Friday, October 19 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (expected). Work is underway, and will continue until the end of November. There will be ongoing water service interruptions during this time, and those directly affected by a planned interruption will receive notice a day prior. Thank you for your patience, as we work to improve the operation of the water distribution system.
