Sparwood Council Facts

Elk River Alliance

Ayla Bennett and Lee-Anne Walker made a presentation to District of Sparwood council Dec. 3 on water monitoring efforts and outcomes on Alexander Creek and Lizard Creek. Once all data has been gathered a report will be available on the Elk River Alliance website.

Coal Town Properties

The owner of Coal Town Properties sent a letter to Council regarding refunds of security deposits on new single family, two family, multiple family, commercial or industrial building permits. District of Sparwood Building Bylaw refunds these deposits to the current owner of the building upon final inspection.

Given that the builder often pays the permit fees, Coal Town Properties is requesting that the bylaw be amended to allow the refunds to be paid to the original payer. Coal Town Properties will be advised that the District of Sparwood will not be making changes to the Building Bylaw.

Sparwood Golf Club

Council approved a request from the Sparwood Golf Club for $9,000 to hire a professional golf course designer to evaluate and design upgrades to the Sparwood Golf Course.

2012 Mosquito Control Update

Council received the ‘Sparwood 2012 IMMPACT Nuisance and West Nile Vector Mosquito Control Program’ report from Culex Environmental. The program targets the aquatic stages of the mosquitoes (larvae and pupae), which are found in relatively discrete bodies of water, as opposed to mosquito adults, which once they emerge can spread over many square miles. Potential larval development sites are sampled at least once every seven days from May through June to determine if any larval treatment is required. In July and August, the frequency of surveillance is usually reduced to once every 10 to 14 days. The complete report is available on our website at www.sparwood.ca.
