Development Variance Permit 1292 Pinyon Court

sparwoodlogoDistrict of Sparwood council May 20 approved a Development Variance Permit application to vary sections of the Zoning Bylaw at 1292 Pinyon Court to allow for construction of a detached accessory building. The variance will reduce the side and rear yard setback requirements to 0.91 m (3 ft) from 1.52 m (5 ft).

Economic Development

Mr. Jude Smith, Business Development Liaison for the District of Sparwood made a presentation to council on projects that he is working on including the Business Retention and Expansion Survey, the Grassy Mountain Coal Development Proposal, and the Elk Valley Economic Development Task Force.

Development Variance Permit – Lilac Terrace

Council authorized sending out notices to surrounding property owners and tenants who may be affected advising them that council will, at the regular meeting of June 16, consider a Development Variance Permit to vary sections of the Zoning Bylaw for Lilac Terrace to allow for construction of a two-storey high density residential addition. The proposed addition will see fifteen (15) rooms added to the existing facility.

Sparwood Traffic Control Review

Sparwood CSIn June of 2013 the Director of Engineering consulted with ICBC about conducting a complete Traffic Control Review of line markings, signs, and intersections within the District of Sparwood. A review was commissioned and occurred in the latter part of 2013 and early 2014. The review entailed the assessment of traffic control measures such as traffic signing, paint marking on roadways, and other control devices that establish rules of the road in accordance with the Motor Vehicle Act.

Recommendations of the review included signage, such as warning and yield signs to be improved at some crosswalks, sidewalk bulbs to be used to reduce traffic speeds, and marking crosswalks with less paint, consistent with guidelines.

Coal Miner Days 2014

Council approved all road closures, use of requested facilities, and equipment for the 2014 Coal Miner Days to be funded from the Coal Miner Days budget, as outlined in the District of Sparwood Policy. A Special Occasion Permit was approved for the Chamber of Commerce to operate a business sociable at the Visitor Information Centre on Friday, June 13, from 5 – 8 p.m.

A Special Occasion Permit was approved for the Coal Miner Days Society to operate a refreshment garden at the ball tournament during Coal Miner Days subject to submission of an approved security plan.

A Special Occasion Permit was approved for the Coal Miner Days Society to operate a cabaret in the Curling Rink on Saturday, June 14, from 9 p.m. – 1 a.m. This approval is also subject to submission of an approved security plan.

Bylaws

Bylaw 1153 cited as “Building Bylaw 1012, 2009,1981, Amendment Bylaw 1153, 2014” was introduced and given first, second, and third reading. This amendment is being brought forward to include a Land Title Search fee in the fee schedule.

Highway 43 and Matevic Road Intersection

In response to a letter sent to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure regarding the intersection at Highway 43 and Matevic Road, the Ministry has re-evaluated the intersection and advised that they will install two additional side road warning signs on both approaches to improve driver awareness and further enhance the safety of this intersection. These signs will alert drivers to the fact that there are side roads ahead and that they should exercise caution as they approach.

Columbia Basin Trust

The District of Sparwood is requesting Quotations from qualified individuals or entities for the delivery of bylaw enforcement and animal control services, by contract, in the District of Sparwood.

2014 Tax Notices

The 2014 tax notices will be sent out shortly. If you are a new owner and do not receive a tax notice by the end of May, please come into the District office to obtain a duplicate copy. Notices are mailed to the owners shown on the Assessment Roll.

Depending upon the date of purchase, we may not have the new owner’s information and the tax notice will be mailed to the previous owner.

Your graduation is certainly an achievement, but you know there’s a lot more to come – goals, dreams, challenges, and opportunities that bring you fulfillment and help you make a positive difference in the world.

Sparwood commemorates seniors turning 75 years of age

The District of Sparwood recognizes the contribution that seniors make to our community.  Those Sparwood seniors who have, or will, reach the age of 75 years this year are invited to meet with Mayor Lois Halko and members of council to sign the ‘Senior’s Birthday Book.’ They will also receive a lilac lapel pin (Sparwood’s flower) that has been specially made to commemorate the occasion.

Please notify the District of Sparwood Municipal Office by June 6, if you, or someone you know has turned 75 years of age or will be turning 75 this year. We will then send an invitation to the recipient to attend an afternoon tea at the Senior’s Drop-In Centre. Family and friends are also encouraged to attend.

The Senior’s Birthday Book will be kept at the Municipal Office as part of our community’s heritage records. Please ensure that you or your loved one becomes part of Sparwood’s history.

Emergency Awareness Day

Sparwood RCEmergency Awareness Day is Saturday, June 7, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Sparwood Recreation Centre.

Something for everyone – kids’ activities such as hose target test, fire engine rides, and ladder truck fountain. Adults can get information on safety, bear awareness, emergency preparedness, and recruitment opportunities.

Get a tour and close up look at various public agency equipment and see demonstrations such as auto extrication, wildfire control, bear trap and more.

Spend the day and enjoy a bite at the Lion’s Barbeque while the kids cool off in the splash park.

There might even be some surprises that you won’t want to miss.
