In the minds of many voters in Kootenay-Columbia, the campaign to choose our next MP is already underway, and members of the Kootenay-Columbia NDP are presenting their choice for Member of Parliament, Wayne Stetski, at a Nomination Convention in Cranbrook on March 15.

“People are deeply unhappy with the current Conservative government, and they don’t feel that the current MP has been at all effective at representing this area,” said Stetski. “Mr. Wilks has been clear; he feels he has to vote the way Stephen Harper tells him, regardless of what his constituents think.

“That’s just not good enough, and I believe most people in this area agree with me. We only get to have one person in Parliament whose job it is to represent the voices of the people of Kootenay-Columbia. I’ll be that strong voice in Ottawa.”

This election, the boundaries of Kootenay-Columbia have been redrawn to include the communities of Nelson, Kaslo and Salmo, which could significantly change the results for the area. These communities are currently represented by NDP MP Alex Atamanenko.

Everyone is welcome to attend at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 15 at the Manual Training Centre in Cranbrook. Stetski will be joined by retiring MP Alex Atamanenko, Nelson Creston MLA Michelle Mungall, Kootenay West MLA Katrine Conroy, Columbia River-Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald as well as many other dignitaries.

“The Harper Conservatives have chosen to fight this election on some very divisive issues like Bill C-51, the ‘anti-terror’ bill,” continued Stetski. “But what they don’t realize is that instead of ensuring that they retain their support at the polls, their actions are making it clear to people of all political stripes that Stephen Harper has once again gone too far.

“Of course we need to ensure that Canada is as safe as possible but the Conservatives have been told by many legal experts that this Bill will take away our rights and freedoms under the guise of fighting terrorism. We cannot allow this denigration of our democracy! If Mr. Wilks was really representing our best interests, he would be demanding changes to C-51 to ensure that the freedoms of all Canadians are protected.”
