Transfer Station closed after dynamite discovered

The Fernie Transfer Station has been evacuated after someone left dynamite at the facility this morning (May 3).

“Fernie Transfer Station staff discovered what appears to be six sticks of dynamite with a detonation device on the floor of the transfer station,” explains Regional District of East Kootenay Communications Officer Loree Duczek. “We immediately evacuated the premises as a safety precaution and the RCMP are now on site.”

The RCMP have requested a 300 metre closure zone around the Fernie Transfer Station, which has prompted the closure Home Hardware and the stretch of Highway in front of the Transfer Station.

Traffic is being diverted around the area on Dicken Road.

“Our main priority is to ensure the staff, public and our emergency responders are safe,” adds Duczek.

The Transfer Station is expected to remain closed for several hours at least.
