Evacuation Alert rescinded for Windermere Creek
The Evacuation Alert has been RESCINDED for 10 properties on the lower reaches of Windermere Creek.
“The crews have been working steadily to remove the build up of sedimentation and restore channel capacity between Victoria Avenue and the mouth of the creek. The work on the ground will continue for the coming days and the carrying capacity of the creek has improved to the point that we are able to lift the Alert,” explained Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Information Officer Loree Duczek.
The RDEK has been working with Water Stewardship and the hydrotechnical engineering consultant overseeing the emergency in-stream work in the creek. A regular monitoring system has been established to help provide triggers for when sediment build ups could raise the risk of localized flooding.
“It’s important to recognize there is still instability within Windermere Creek and, as is the case with any waterway, sudden and unpredictable changes are possible, particularly in the event of heavy rainfall,” added Duczek. Residents are encouraged to continue to remain aware of the conditions on the creek throughout freshet.
The State of Local Emergency for Windermere remains in place as the RDEK continues to undertake the emergency in-stream work on the Creek.
The only remaining active Evacuation Alert in the RDEK at this time is in Fairmont Creek, where work continues to restore capacity within the creek’s debris flow mitigation system following a significant debris flow on May 31.
