Downtown Invermere revitalization work underway

The District of Invermere has awarded Phase 1 of the Downtown Invermere Revitalization – Landscape Project to Wilco Contractors Southwest Inc. and work commenced onsite today, with completion planned for mid-November.

The on-site work will commence at 7 a.m. MST and conclude at 7 p.m. Monday to Friday for the term of the works.

β€œThe project will likely affect the availability of parking and pedestrian accessibility for abbreviated periods but no full street closures for either vehicle or pedestrian traffic is anticipated,” the district reported on social media today.

Key project components will include increasing space and amenities with public seating areas, adding street trees for aesthetics, shading, infrastructure protection and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction benefit, improving accessibility and pedestrian safety, curb replacement, select sidewalk replacement with refreshed paver inlays, upgraded electrical and street lighting, pedestrian scale directional and information signage, as well as new irrigation for the downtown flower gardens and baskets, angle parking alignment, inclusion of additional amenities such as benches, waste / recycle containers, and bicycle parking, the district outlined.

The project, including planning, design, and implementation is 100% funded through successful grant applications made by the District of Invermere to the Columbia Basin Trust, BC Tourism Dependent Communities (BC-TDC), and Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI).

No direct District of Invermere general taxation revenue is being used on this project.

The funding sources do have overlapping scope for some key elements as there are specific elements and timelines associated with each funding source that this project will achieve, the district explained.

The grant amounts include: Columbia Basin Trust – $500,000; Provincial BC Tourism Dependent Communities grant – $700,000; Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI) Funding – $128,000.

The District of Invermere engaged Urban Systems Ltd (USL) to prepare the revitalization design for this project which is essentially an extension of the previous projects completed in the Downtown that this undertaking will connect. USL, Wilco Southwest Contracting Inc., and District of Invermere staff will oversee and implement the project to its completion.
