Hawes: it’s time to think big
I am happy to be running for a second term on council for the District of Invermere. The first term has rushed by, and I have learned a great deal.
I am pleased by the things we’ve accomplished, such as the new pathways throughout Invermere, the Integrated Community Sustainability Plan, and many others. I have advocated for our priceless environment; for collaboration with and support of our most valuable and dedicated community organizations and the initiatives they bring forward; for a strong, transparent working relationship with our business community; for the idea of a broad, sustainable, locally-based economy; for responsible management; for a community structured to provide opportunity for every citizen, and for a local government that is engaged with and grateful for its citizens. Many of these are concepts which cannot or will not be realized overnight, and I would value the opportunity to continue working towards them!
I think it’s time to think big – to not be afraid of bold ideas and new ways of thinking about our community. I think it’s time to acknowledge that our valley has intrinsic value; not only as a sought-after and spectacular destination (which it most certainly is!), but also as a complete and priceless thing, in and of itself. That tourism is just one avenue to realizing its potential. And while marketing and tourism are clearly important avenues, there are many other avenues which remain largely unexplored.
I agree with the Integrated Community Sustainability Plan recommendation that calls for an Economic Development Officer to be hired to help us explore those other avenues. Consider the idea of a conference centre/performing arts centre in our downtown core – it could draw customers for our stores, restaurants and hotels and add a level of vitality year-round. Imagine creative ways to support entrepreneurship and clean industry that could provide real jobs for our children and keep them in the valley. A plan IN ACTION for attainable and/or social housing; an industrial composting project that could generate jobs and income while reducing waste; a plan to encourage agriculture and increase the availability of local food… These are, I admit, big ideas. That’s why we should get started right away!
You have big decisions, Invermere! Starting with the election in November. Please take the time to learn what your local candidates are all about, and vote for what you believe in. I would love to talk to you! Please find me on Facebook as Councillor Spring Hawes. Email me at [email protected], or call me at 250-688-0271.
