Invermere Music Fest this weekend

The forecast for Invermere this weekend is for a solid chance of great music and entertainment lakeside.

Actually, the forecast is for bright sunny skies (and possible smoke) with temperatures ranging from 28 to 29 C for August 18 and 19 as the Invermere Music Fest 2017 unfolds at Kinsmen Beach and Pynelogs Cultural Centre grounds.

Things get rolling Friday evening at 6 p.m. when Chipko Jones takes to the Lake Stage, followed at 7:10 p.m. by The Long War.

At 7:45 p.m. it is Vancouver’s The Boom Booms, followed at 9:30 p.m. for The Wet Secrets taking day one home.

The Wet Secrets are a six-piece rock ‘n roll gang fuelled by a primal, fuzzy punk rock spirit, and steered by a love of slinky disco, art rock, 70’s horns and AM gold songwriting.

Another five quality acts perform on Saturday, led off at 4:30 p.m. by the Dandelions, featuring Invermere’s own Ben and Shilo Cameron.

Next up at 6 p.m. is the vibrant, genuine and soulful Dawn Pemberton, followed at 7:15 p.m. by the well-travelled, classically trained Sarah Hawkyard.

Ridley Bent returns with his latest release Wildcard, the anticipated follow up of Rabbit on My Wheel showcasing the Western Canada-based Country artist’s keen fascination for characters whose life on the straight and narrow rarely lasts past the nearest exit to a short, crooked road. Ridley takes to the stage at about 7:45 p.m.

Closing the festival this year is the Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, originally formed in 1996 when Colin Linden, Stephen Fearing and Tom Wilson came together to record what was suppose to be a one- off tribute album to the great Canadian songwriter Willie P. Bennett.

At the time, all three members were deeply committed to burgeoning solo careers that they had no intentions of putting on hold, and had no plans to turn Blackie into an ongoing concern. That was 20 years ago.
