Museum website is back and improved

Finally, after months of frustration, puzzlement, and learning, the Windermere Valley Museum has a new website!

For anyone with an interest in website development, here is a bit of our story.

We designed and hosted our original website using free Microsoft tools. As time passed though, Microsoft changed their offering – by charging, rolling the tools in with their new subscription software and finally by ending their public website hosting service!

We had a limited time to re-create our website using different software and finding a different host. As always, as a local, small charitable society, our objective was to find the least costly options before our site disappeared.

We settled on Go-Daddy Word Press Hosting and used a free WP theme to practice and re-create a site. At the end of March, our new website finally went live (with the same URL and just days to spare).

Even though it was live, however, many tweaks and improvements were needed to bring it to a reasonable standard. And most recently, with security notification changes coming to all the popular search engines, we decided to enable some form of SSL certification.

In short, our page needed to change from http to https.

Finally, with the free security service provided by Cloudflare, we feel ready to refer you to our new, secure site.

One feature of the new site, not available on the old, is a blog – called ‘Recent Posts.’

Please note the museum’s hours have changed. As of June 4, the museum opens daily – Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Summer Opening Tea is June 23 at 2 p.m.

After all the seasonal cleaning, raking and planting, the museum is ready for summer visitors.

Please come to the tea where our guest speaker will talk about the Rotarians 30th Anniversary of Flags.

Our most recent display follows our summer theme of ‘Fashions.’

Music entertainment by Second Winds.

We have now hired a summer student! Thank you all for sharing.
