Officer kicked by theft suspect

A man is in custody after kicking the police officer who arrested him for theft last Thursday in Invermere.

On Thursday, May 10, Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a report of theft from a local gift shop, where a male was reported to have stolen two chains and four rings valued at $150.

The male was subsequently identified, located and arrested by one of the police officers conducting patrols in the area.

Prior to being placed under arrest the male managed to chug the beer he had been holding in his hand and then resisted the officer’s attempts to secure him in handcuffs. Due to the male’s behaviour he was taken to Invermere & District Hospital for evaluation.

“While at the hospital and still handcuffed the male was able to kick the same officer in the chest,” reported Cst. Chris Joy of Columbia Valley RCMP.

The male, who is known to police, was remanded in custody to appear in court in Invermere today (May 14).
