Marriage commissioner correctly suspects scam

Columbia Valley RCMP is alerting the public to a recent attempted scam on a local marriage commissioner.

On Thursday, July 25, a marriage commissioner reported to Columbia Valley RCMP that someone had contacted her via email and requested her services to perform a marriage this summer.

“The marriage commissioner became suspicious when she received a photograph of a cheque for about 10 times what she quoted for her services. The individual insisted she deposit the cheque to her account with an online banking app and claimed the additional funds were for her to pay a photographer and caterer,” reported Sgt. Darren Kakuno, Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment commander.

Police confirmed the call was a scam and cautioned the commissioner about engaging in any further email contact with this individual.

No personal banking information was shared in this case, police noted.
