3 facts you need to know

billbennetthorizOn the new Off Road Vehicle Act

By Bill Bennett,

Kootenay East MLA

1.  After 14 years of study and consultation with (off-road vehicle) ORV user groups, government has decided to do what many other provinces and states did years before – create a management regime for ORV use on Crown land to support responsible use but reduce irresponsible use.

2. ORVs must have a license plates (same ICBC system as autos) to identify the few irresponsible riders. ORV owners can now voluntarily obtain a one-time registration for their ORV for $48. Registration becomes mandatory on June 1, 2015.

3. Sales tax has been payable on purchase of ORVs for decades but at registration, only those ORVs purchased after July 1, 2010 are subject to sales tax. This covers quads, snowmobiles, off road bikes.
