Additional review proposed for Victoria Avenue changes

The City of Cranbrook contracts traffic engineering firms to design road safety improvement plans to be made and implemented each year as part of the annual road paving program.

In late April 2026, some potential turning lane safety improvements for Victoria Avenue were announced, which included reinforcing existing painted left hand turn restrictions by installing concrete dividers. While the existing left hand turns into and out of accesses that service A&W, Domino’s, the car wash, the Co-op, and others off of Victoria Avenue are already illegal, these accesses are being used by some motorists.

The proposed change to concrete barriers to physically restrict these turns are of significant concern to some business owners and operators.

The city is responding to these concerns raised by the businesses by deferring this one specific change while conducting a focused review with a second engineering firm that will explore all options for business access at this location.

The city will also have consultations with these businesses on the feasibility of these options, then determine costs. This review, consultation and costing work will be completed prior to making any changes at this location.

New concrete medians are still planned to be installed at 12th Street North, 8th Street North, and 4th Street North intersections with Victoria Avenue, guiding traffic to right-in, right-out movements only later this summer.
