City reviewing arena safety and processes

All four of the City of Cranbrook’s arena facilities are being reviewed by staff, following the tragic events that occurred in the City of Fernie earlier this week.

The city is committed to the safety of the public and staff in all of its buildings, facilities and public spaces.

To assist in the review, the city is bringing in an outside specialist to conduct a full audit of the refrigeration plant operations and safety protocols at Western Financial Place, the Cranbrook Curling Club, along with the Kinsmen and Memorial Arenas.

Each of the refrigeration systems used in the ice plants use liquid ammonia, as part of the process. Safety measures are in place in all Cranbrook facilities, including monitoring equipment that continuously measures ammonia content, which will trigger an alarm if it reaches or exceeds a certain level.
