Dancing encouraged at final Summer Sounds concert

The last Summer Sounds and Dancing in the Park concert of 2022 will feature the talents of Tom Bungay, Drew Prinn and Voodoo Rhythm Kings at Cranbrook Rotary Park on Saturday, August 27 from 6-10 p.m.

Leading the show at 6 p.m. is Tom Bungay. Originally from Labrador, he has called Cranbrook, home since retiring from the Canadian Armed Forces after 25 years of service. Bungay (pictured right) has performed with many talented musicians throughout the Kootenays. Many will remember him as lead vocals and rhythm guitar for the popular pre-pandemic band called East-West Connection.

He credits his fine-tuned skills to the numerous opportunities to learn from, and perform with, the musicians in the Columbia Basin. His influences range from Classic Country, 50s to 70s Rock, Folk to modern country. Being from Newfoundland, he is partial to Maritime music as well as traditional Irish tunes.

Next on the schedule at 7 p.m. is Drew Prinn, from the duo called Tall Timbers. Prinn discovered a love for singing early in childhood with her dad, Dave Prinn, who will be accompanying her on stage with guitar and vocals. She is a shameless karaoke fiend so prepare to experience her version of popular songs.

Finally, to wrap up the concert and the entire Summer Sounds program for 2022 is the very popular Voodoo Rhythm Kings at 8 p.m. The band consists of Keith Larsen (guitar/vocals), Ferdy Belland (bass/vocals) and Ben Dunn (drums/percussion).

Their resumes are long having performed with notable bands such as Bif Naked, the Honeymen and Redgirl. These veteran performers have played dive bars and festival stages all over North America and beyond. Their rock-and-blues-oriented performance is tight and punchy with edgy vocals on top providing an intense sharp quality to their sound. Dancing is encouraged to add to the event’s fun and to celebrate the many local talented artists among us.

The August 27 concert is sponsored by Baker Hill Dental, a dental practice devoted to giving back to their community and the world. A high standard of excellence in personalized dental care enables Baker Hill Dental to provide the quality dental services their patients deserve.

It has been an incredible summer of live music in Cranbrook’s downtown core for the entire community and its visitors with 55 artists showcased on the Rotary Park bandstand of which 96% are based in the Columbia Basin.

This falls in line with the mission of the organizers, the Fisher Peak Performing Artists Society (FPPAS) “to promote the Performing Arts in the Kootenay and provide support for musicians and performers of all types and genres through live entertainment events and mentorship.” FPPAS also connects event organizers with performers through their online Kootenay Performer Directory (K-LINK) and are preparing to present the fifth version of the ‘PEAK’ Music Festival, with free admission, on September 2 and 3.
