Hunt continues for duo after flight from police

The male suspect

Cranbrook RCMP is still on the hunt for two suspects involved in a theft and subsequent flight from police yesterday in a truck reported stolen from Alberta.

In the early morning hours of August 25, Cranbrook RCMP received a call about a theft of bottles from a residence in the 900-block of 6th St S.  An unknown male and female went through a closed gate onto a deck and allegedly stole several bags of cans.  The caller notified the RCMP and officers made patrols.

RCMP located the suspect vehicle in the vicinity of the bottle depot. The officer initiated his emergency flashers and the pickup took off, weaving in and out of traffic in order to evade police.  RCMP was able to obtain photos of the suspects and the vehicle and is asking the public for assistance in identifying the couple.

Later in the afternoon police were notified that the vehicle was travelling southbound on Highway 93/95 from Canal Flats toward Cranbrook.

A member of the Cranbrook Crime Reduction Unit was able to locate the vehicle and keep an eye on it while other officers made plans to stop the truck. A spike belt was deployed successfully at the Fort Steele interchange.

The suspect vehicle was able to make its way to the Park Royal area of Cranbrook where it eventually stopped. The suspects fled from the area on foot.

An extensive search of the area was conducted by Cranbrook RCMP, members of the BC Highway Patrol and Conservation Officer service. The suspects were not located.

“We are still actively looking for the two individuals in the photos,” said Cst. Katie Forgeron on behalf of Cranbrook RCMP.  “The suspect driver put many people in danger by refusing to stop for police and continuing driving into a populated area.  If you know who the suspects are, we would appreciate you reaching out to us.

“We would also like to thank our partner agencies for assisting us in attempting to locate the suspects in this incident,” Cst. Forgeron added.  “Several branches of the RCMP along with the Conservation Officer Service dropped what they were doing in order to assist.”
