ICE bolster goaltending depth

The Kootenay ICE has signed 2002-born goaltender Gage Alexander.

The ICE selected the Okotoks, Alberta native in the seventh round (133rd overall) in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft.

The 15-year-old has played in eight games with the Rockyview Raiders Minor Midget AAA of the AMMHL this season. He’s posted a 1.75 goals against average, a .929 save percentage, two shutouts and a record of 7-0-1.

Alexander is currently ranked second in the league in goals against average.

“Gage first and foremost is an exciting athlete; he has only recently started to learn some of the nuances of his position,” said Matt Cockell, President and General Manager. “Last year he was playing Bantam AA and the growth that he has shown in his game since the bantam draft has certainly caught our attention.”

Cockell added, “We feel very good about the goaltending position moving forward.”

With Thursday’s announcement, the ICE has signed six of its 10 selections in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft – Connor McClennon (first round, second overall), Anson McMaster (second round, 23rd overall), James Form (third round, 45th overall), Will Gurski (fourth round, 72nd overall), Owen Pederson (fifth round, 89th overall) and Gage Alexander (seventh round, 133rd overall).

The next home game for the ICE is Wednesday, December 27 against the Calgary Hitmen. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tickets are available and can be purchased online at ICEcountry.ca, at the ICE Gear Store at Western Financial Place or by calling 250-417-0322.
