JCI Kootenay boosts food bank coffers

JCI Kootenay today presented a donation of $3,957.04 to the Cranbrook Food Bank.

The funds stemmed from the annual Santa Claus Parade presented by JCI Kootenay.

“Without the support of local organizations and businesses, JCI would not have been able to donate such a large sum of money. The food bank has been the recipient of the Santa Claus donations for a number of years and we are proud to be able to support them,” said JCI Santa Claus Parade Committee Chair Shane Nickel-Thibodeau.

The boost in funding arrives at the right time for the food bank, which recently lost a large supplier of food items.

“We recently learned that the Calgary Food Bank Food Share Program, which has provided us with 170,000 pounds of food a year, is going to be suspended due to their own increased numbers,” explained Katie Orr, Food Bank Executive Director.

The funds will be used to purchase needed food items, she said, adding, “We are very grateful for the donation. It will make a huge impact.”

The Cranbrook Food Bank currently supports about 72 families a day and 2,500 clients and has experienced a 29% increase in visits over 2021.

“We rely on the support of our community and in the end we have a very generous community,” Orr said.

The Cranbrook Food Bank, located at 1624 Industrial Road 2, is always in need of donations.
