Library has much to offer area children

Family Literacy Week 2019 takes place in B.C. from January 20 to 27.

The theme, sponsored by Decoda Literacy Solutions, is ‘Let’s Make It!’

January 27 is the 20th anniversary of Family Literacy Day which is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada. Their theme for this anniversary celebratory year is ‘Take 20!’ Take 20 minutes to make learning together part of every day.

Babies start to learn language as soon as they are born. They learn the sounds and rhythms of language by playing with you. When you talk, sing, read and cuddle with them, you support their healthy development. Play simple games with your baby. Read to your baby. It is never too early to start the reading tradition.

The Cranbrook Public Library has programs that introduce children to the joys and wonder of reading. Toddlers, aged 18 months to three years, and their caregivers are invited to come on Fridays for stories and songs. Preschoolers, aged three to five, and their caregivers, are welcome to come on Wednesdays for stories, fingerplays and puppet stories. Thursdays at 11 a.m. is Baby Laptime where babies and their parents can come to learn rhymes and songs.

Storytimes at the public library give parents an opportunity to listen to stories presented to children.   The programs provide a place where parents can socialize with other caregivers and young children can meet others in their age group.

‘Grab and go’ bags of preselected kid’s books are available for parents to sign out with their library cards.

Celebrate Family Literacy week at the Cranbrook Public Library with storytimes on Wednesday at 11 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.; Thursdays at 11 a.m.; and Friday at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Join in the “Make It” activities at the Cranbrook Public Library on Tuesday, January 29 at 5:30 p.m.—board games, circuit snaps, create your stories with alphabet stickers.

The Cranbrook Public Library has much to offer those children living in Cranbrook and Electoral Area C. Children can join the Cranbrook Public Library by bringing their parents into the library to sign them up for their own free library card.
