Limit set for election signage along Highway 3 corridor

The flow of repetitive election signage that speckles the sides of Highway 3 through Cranbrook during elections is going to be slowed.

City of Cranbrook council voted Monday (June 13) to allow a maximum of 20 signs per candidate along the Highway 3 corridor during an official election for the voters in the Cranbrook area including municipal, School District No. 5, provincial and federal election periods.

The area of the Highway 3 corridor is designated by the westside ” Welcome to Cranbrook” sign, to the east side “Welcome to Cranbrook” sign, a city Engineering and Development Services department report explained.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) staff have stated that they will support the City bylaws put into effect along the Hwy 3 corridor, the report added.

City staff reviewed the bylaws concerning election signs on major thoroughfares in Kimberley, Invermere, Fernie, Vernon, Penticton, Ft. St. John, Campbell River and White Rock and considered how they regulate election signs in terms of size, quantity, location, while meeting the capacity of their bylaw department to monitor and patrol.

“Those comparative cities that had numerous restrictions on the election signs, in terms of location etc., also had the resource capacity within their bylaw department to monitor and regulate accordingly. City of Cranbrook, has two bylaw officers on hand, to patrol and regulate the signs along the Highway 3 Cranbrook corridor.

“With some municipal elections hosting over 14 candidates, the quantity of 20 signs along the Highway 3 corridor was seen as manageable for the relatively short duration of most elections. City public works crews also stop mowing the grass along the Highway 3 corridor due to the high number of signs in the area.”
