Rash of election campaign sign vandalism reported

Cranbrook RCMP has received numerous reports of theft and vandalism to a significant number of campaign signs in the community.

The reports come from various locations across Cranbrook and are not limited to any one specific candidate or political party, said Detachment commander S/Sgt. Barry Graham.

“Defacing, altering or stealing a campaign sign is not only an offense under the Canada Elections Act but also can also be considered an act of mischief, or various other offenses chargeable under the Criminal Code of Canada.

“While there are no indications specific individuals are being targeted, as we approach voting day, the Cranbrook RCMP would like to remind the public to express their political views in the voting booth and not resort to acts of vandalism,” he said.

Complaints about the destruction, theft of vandalism of elections signs should be directed to the Commissioner of Canada Elections and reported to the Cranbrook RCMP non-emergency line, police advised.
