Unused warming centre closes and shifts support to Alliance

On Tuesday, December 20, the City of Cranbrook reached out to the First Baptist Church and were successful in coordinating support for the opening of a church owned warming centre. The funding is available through the Emergency Management BC and is coordinated locally through the Regional Emergency Management Program.

The City of Cranbrook has offered financial support to Community Connections and Street Angels staff over the last two weeks, both of which were sorry to have to decline due to operational capacity issues.

Although the warming centre was set up at First Baptist Tuesday evening, there were no users of the space, so it was closed for the night. Instead, First Baptist will be shifting its support behind a warming centre opened at the Alliance Church on Kootenay Street North Tuesday night as well.

Organizers at the Alliance Church (pictured) have advised that they had six people stay in their warming centre Tuesday night.

The Alliance Church centre is open again tonight from 7 p.m. through until 9 a.m. on Thursday. The warming centre will be open and available for those who may need it through until Friday night.

BC Housing, through the Travelodge shelter location, has been starting to double up people in rooms, where possible to allow additional people to stay and get out of the cold, if they need it. The Travelodge is funded to offer 55-spaces, but has been accepting 62 each night since it has become colder.

Additionally, the City of Cranbrook continues to offer space in both the Cranbrook Public Library and Western Financial Place as warming centres for those who need it during the day. The library is open until 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday nights, while Western Financial Place is open until 9 p.m. both nights.

The City of Cranbrook will continue to provide support to those who need it through this cold weather event.

The giving and the support of the community and the coordinated effort by so many groups and organizations in the city during this time has been exceptional and is greatly appreciated.
