Another bout of winter coming: Mainroad

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting is alerting motorists to the arrival of “another quick weather event” with the potential for “rapidly forming ice and slippery conditions.”

In an East Kootenay road and weather alert, Mainroad notes that starting Wednesday night (Jan. 10) and continuing through Thursday there could be accumulations of snow up to approximately 10cm through all parts of the service area.

“Concurrent with this will be a drop in temperatures into the -6C to -10C range while colder in the Elk Valley.  Falling temperatures immediately after a period of melting can produce rapidly forming ice and slippery conditions,” Mainroad warned.

Environment Canada is forecasting snow to begin falling this evening in the East Kootenay (Jan. 8) and continuing until Thursday (Jan. 11).

Tomorrow (Jan. 9) in Kootenay National Park there could be winds as strong as 50 km/h and lows of about -15 C.

“Mainroad crews are out patrolling but conditions can change in minutes under these circumstances so motorists should be prepared. This system should pass by late Thursday and temperatures will remain in the sub-zero region for the weekend,” the regional highways contractor stated.

A quick look at DriveBC shows that all regional highways are under varying degrees of winter driving conditions.

As always, watch for wildlife, be prepared for winter driving conditions and check DriveBC before you go.  Backcountry travellers should also check current avalanche conditions as rapidly changing temperatures combined with snowfall can increase the avalanche hazard rating.
