The increase in positive case numbers in the past 24 hours is linked primarily to the ongoing community outbreaks in B.C.  The province has been doing increased testing at the Mission federal correctional facility and as a result, 40 additional cases have been detected there.  There are 106 inmates and 12 staff who have tested positive and 2 inmates are in hospital.  In addition, there are two ongoing outbreaks at poultry plants in BC.  16 new cases are connected to the Superior Poultry facility (for a total of 18), while the United Poultry plant, which closed a few days ago, has had no new cases in the past 24 hours and remains at 35 positive cases.  A total of 11 B.C. residents with the Kearl Lake camp in northern Alberta have now tested positive.

There were two new COVID related deaths in the past 24 hours, including the first in one of BC’s first nations communities.

The province is working with the cities of Vancouver and Victoria to transition people living in encampments in Oppenheimer Park, Topaz Park and on Pandora Avenue into safe, temporary accommodations with wraparound supports to protect their health and safety in the overlapping COVID-19 and overdose crises.  Today’s announcement includes a plan to support people in housing, the mental health and social supports, while finding 1,000 hotel rooms to house them in to address their immediate safety.
