Emergency Preparedness Fair coming to central EK

An interactive, educational and fun-filled day is in store for residents of the Cranbrook / Kimberley area as the first Emergency Preparedness Fair gets underway on May 7.

“The first full week of May is National Emergency Preparedness Week and the goal of the fair is to help residents learn how they can prepare themselves for emergencies and also meet the emergency responders who aid them in an emergency or crisis,” explained Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Central Emergency Program Emergency Social Services Director Bill Barger. “There will be something for everyone and no shortage of things to see and do.”

Representatives from Cranbrook Fire Department, RCMP, Cranbrook Search & Rescue, Air Search & Rescue, BC Ambulance, Ankors, Salvation Army, Canadian Disaster Animal Relief Team, BC SPCA, Emergency Social Services, Holistic Emergency Preparedness Response, RDEK Emergency Program will all be participating and showcasing a wide range of rescue equipment.

Throughout the day, there will be Life Kits available. “A Life Kit is a home information package that contains all the critical information first responders need when they respond to an emergency call,” explained Barger. “We will have Kits for people to take with them and provide the information they need to properly place the Kits.”

The Emergency Preparedness Fair runs on Sunday, May 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Western Financial Place parking lot. There is no charge to attend.

There will be a fundraising barbecue to raise money for Street Angels. “It is really important for people to be prepared and ready in the event of an emergency. The goal of the fair is to help give people the tools they need to have a plan,” added Barger.
