Extended snowfall forecast for region

Snow sports enthusiasts rejoice; local highway users harrumph – extended snowfall is forecast this weekend in the East Kootenay.

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting reports its crews are currently out pre-treating highways with anti-ice material ahead of this weekend’s snowfall.

Snow fall is expected to begin late Saturday morning for the Cranbrook and Kimberley areas and continue well into the week. Snowfall accumulations for the Cranbrook area for Saturday are up to five cm and for Sunday up to 10 cm, Mainroad forecasted in a stakeholder’s advisory this afternoon (Dec. 16).

In the Yahk and Moyie areas, snowfall is expected to begin Saturday afternoon and continue into next week. Snowfall accumulations for Saturday are forecasted at two to four cms and Sunday accumulations are forecasted for 10 – 15 cm. 

In the Elk Valley, snowfall is expected to begin early Saturday morning and continue into the week. Snowfall accumulations for Saturday are forecasted for up to 10 cm and for Sunday accumulations are forecasted for up to 10 cm, Mainroad reported. 

And snowfall is expected to begin early Saturday morning and continue into the week in the Columbia Valley. Snowfall accumulations for Saturday are forecasted for five to 10 cm and Sunday accumulations are forecasted for up to five cm, Mainroad said.

Temperatures are forecasted to drop on Sunday throughout the region and continue with the cold weather into the week.
