Extreme Cold Warning for Elk Valley and KNP
Environment Canada February 21 issued an Extreme Cold Warning for the Elk Valley and Kootenay National Park (KNP) areas.
A period of cold wind chills near minus 35 is expected tonight and Tuesday night in Kootenay National Park, Yoho National Park and the Elk Valley.
“Extreme cold wind chill values near minus 35 are expected tonight and Tuesday night as an Arctic airmass settles over the region,” Environment Canada stated.
Some moderation of temperatures is expected during the daytime.
“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk.
“Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.
“Check on older family, friends and neighbours.
“If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.”
The Cranbrook/Kimberley and Columbia Valley areas are expected to drop to about -24.
