Fall recruitment drive begins for paid on-call firefighters
The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) is calling on residents in the Columbia Valley, Elk Valley and South Country to step forward now and join their local fire department as paid on-call firefighters.
Rural fire departments depend on community members who are willing to respond when their neighbours need help most. From structure fires and motor vehicle incidents to medical emergencies and other urgent calls, paid on-call firefighters play a critical role in protecting lives, property and communities across the region.
The fall firefighter recruitment drive is now underway, and the RDEK is encouraging residents to apply as soon as possible.
“Our communities rely on people who are prepared to step up when the call comes,” said Columbia Valley Rural Fire and Rescue Service Chief Drew Sinclair. “No previous firefighting experience is required. We provide the training, equipment and ongoing support needed to help new recruits build the skills and confidence to serve safely and effectively.”
The RDEK has fire departments in Jaffray, Baynes Lake, Elko, Hosmer, Fairmont Hot Springs, Windermere, Edgewater and Panorama. New recruits are needed to help ensure these departments have the people and capacity required to respond when emergencies happen.
Paid on-call firefighters receive compensation for emergency call-outs and training and may be eligible for extended benefits. In addition to serving their community, recruits gain valuable emergency response, first aid, teamwork and leadership skills.
“Every new member strengthens our ability to respond,” said Elk Valley & South Country Rural Fire and Rescue Service Deputy Chief Ben Goertzen. “When people join their local department, they are not just volunteering their time — they are helping protect their neighbours, their families and their community when it matters most.”
Residents from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Whether you are looking for a meaningful way to give back, build new skills, or be part of a dedicated emergency response team, this is an opportunity to make a direct and lasting difference.
Interested applicants can visit the RDEK website to complete an application form or pick one up at their local Fire Hall. The deadline to apply is September 30.
