Making Halloween more accessible in Kimberley

This Halloween, several residents in the Alpine Crescent area are helping make trick-or-treating more accessible and inclusive for children of all abilities.

From 4 to 5:30 p.m., participating residents will move down their driveways to bring the treats closer to the street, helping remove physical barriers for children who may have difficulty navigating stairs, steep driveways or other obstacles.

Participating homes are also being encouraged to consider other ways children experience Halloween. This may include limiting jump scares or other unexpected sensory experiences and having non-edible treats available for children who may need an alternative option.

Watch for orange signs on lawns identifying homes participating in accessible trick-or-treating.

The community is also encouraged to remember that not every disability or accessibility need is visible. A child may not say “trick or treat,” may avoid eye contact, may not be wearing a costume, or may need a little more time or space. Cognitive, sensory and other needs can affect how children participate in Halloween, and a little patience and understanding can make a big difference.

Businesses participating in this year’s Platzl Trick-or-Treat have also been asked to consider accessibility and ways they can make the experience welcoming for children with different needs.

Accessible trick-or-treating doesn’t mean changing the fun of Halloween. It simply means removing some of the barriers that can make participating more difficult for some children. A few small adjustments can help make Halloween a fun and welcoming experience for more Kimberley kids.

The City of Kimberley would like to thank the Alpine Crescent residents, Platzl businesses and everyone in the community who is taking a moment to consider different abilities this Halloween. Special thanks to the Accessibility Advisory Committee for championing this important initiative.
