Montana earthquake felt in region

The largest of a recent earthquake swarm around Lincoln, Montana, was felt in areas of the East Kootenay and Southern Alberta early this morning (July 6).

The US Geological Survey (USGS) Seismic reported a magnitude 5.8 earthquake was recorded 11 km SSE of Lincoln, which is about 70 km northwest of Helena, with people in the Elk Valley, Kimberley and Cranbrook stating on social media they felt their houses shaking and rattling, more than 400 km away.

Along with this morningā€™s quake, a dozen more tremors have been recorded in that area, ranging in magnitude from 4.9 to 2.7 by the USGS.

While earthquake swarms are normal for the Yellowstone area, 300 km southeast, they are not considered common for that area.
