RDEK posts reminders about rural fireworks

As we head into Canada Day, a few reminders about fireworks in the rural parts of the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK).

  1. The setting off of fireworks is regulated by the province – and is prohibited whenever there is a Category 2 Open Burning Ban in place.
  2. At the time of this post, the setting off of fireworks is currently allowed in the Southeast Fire Centre – as there is no Category 2 restriction in place.
  3. The sale of fireworks is prohibited in the rural parts of the RDEK annually from May 1 to October 1. This only relates to the sale. We have no jurisdiction over the setting off of fireworks – which is provincial.

Before doing any burning, or setting off fireworks, you should always check the Fire Bans and Restrictions page on www.bcwildfire.ca (click on Southeast Fire Centre) as this is where you will find the most up-to-date information about what activities are permitted.

The bylaws and regulations for incorporated municipalities are sometimes different – so if you live in a municipality, you should always check with your municipal office for guidance on what activities are permitted.
