Strong winds playing havoc already
Hydro-electrical service is being interrupted in the Elk Valley and Columbia Valley as high winds begin to arrive from the Pacific Coast.
Though Environment Canada’s earlier alert about high winds didn’t include the Elk Valley, there are several current power outages, including two in Elkford cutting power from 1,552 customers at this time.
There is also a small outage near Sparwood on Lower Elk Valley Road, with 45 customers impacted.
And 96 customers are without power in the Indian Beach area of Windermere.
“Damaging winds have caused multiple outages to customers in the Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley, Sunshine Coast, Vancouver Island, and Interior. We expect outages to increase until the winds abate. Crews have been dispatched to all areas to restore power quickly and safely. Exact restoration times will not be available until full damage assessments are complete . Please check back for the latest updates,” BC Hydro reported earlier this afternoon.
Highway 43 between Elkford and Sparwood is also closed at this time, 10 km north of the junction with Highway 3 because of hydro lines down. A detour is available via Lower Elk Valley Road. Estimated opening time is 2:30 p.m.
Hydro reports crews have been dispatched to each outage.
