Travel advisories for Elk Valley and KNP
DriveBC is warning motorists about several extreme highway conditions thanks to heavy rain and snow in the Elk Valley and Kootenay National Park (KNP).
There is a travel advisory in effect along Highway 3 between Sparwood and Elko. There is extreme heavy rains and localized flooding. Travel is not recommended unless absolutely necessary. Water is reported pooling on Highway 3 between Sparwood and Fernie.
There is also flooding between Cunliffe Road and Caldwell Frontage (four km east of Fernie). The road is closed. Watch for traffic control. Expect minor delays. Detour via Dicken Road.
DriveBC has also issued a travel advisory in effect at Kootenay National Park/Highway 93 due to winter driving conditions.
The forecast is calling for heavy snowfall through Monday, then turning to rain. Snowfall up to 50cm is expected. Drive with caution, prepare for changing conditions and consider alternative travel plans. Travel is not recommended, DriveBC stated.
All area highways are being impacted by rain and snow at this time.
