Cold conditions prompt reminder for safety kits

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting is encouraging residents who have to travel regional highways to keep survival kits in their vehicles.

“Winter driving conditions prevail throughout so please drive to the conditions. This means drop your speed to match road conditions. No matter how much driving experience you have, the way your vehicle will move on snow or ice is unpredictable. The posted speed is the maximum speed for ideal conditions. In winter, it’s safer to drive below the posted speed limit. Nighttime temperatures are dropping well below -20C so anyone travelling, please ensure you and your vehicle are prepared for extreme cold conditions,” Mainroad noted in a media release.

This means carrying an emergency survival kit in your vehicle.

An emergency kit should contain: non-perishable food; blankets; first aid supplies; windshield scraper; snow brush; extra windshield washer fluid; fuel line antifreeze; flares, matches or lighter; tire chains and gloves; shovel and traction mat; sand or kitty litter; flashlight; extra batteries; battery jumper cables; spare tire wheel wrench and jack; extra clothing and footwear and sandbags for extra weight.

Currently, the weather in the region is stable, cold and overcast with occasional light flurries.

Mainroad crews are patrolling, spot sanding and ice blading throughout the service area so please keep a safe distance from our highway maintenance equipment.
