Elk Valley community kicks off the river season
The Elk River Alliance (ERA) hosted a successful River Ready Season Kick-off in Fernie on June 4 to promote and celebrate a safe start to the season.
Nearly 100 avid anglers, rafters, guides, and river enthusiasts gathered to learn, connect, and celebrate another summer on the Elk River.

Speakers from Yaq ̓ it ʔa·knuqⱡi ‘it First Nation, Nupqu, citizen scientists, and ERA, discussed topics covering traditional river use, community-driven river flow gauges, Westslope cutthroat trout populations, Whirling Disease, and proper fish handling.
ERA Executive Director Chad Hughes says the event showcased how much knowledge and passion the community has for the Elk River watershed.
“Many of us live, work, and play in this watershed so that we can recreate, and explore such a special location. This event demonstrated how that connection translates into respect for the river, and a desire to protect and share it with others,” said Hughes.
The River Ready Season Kick-Off was made possible thanks to title sponsor Elk Valley Resources (EVR), food and beverage sponsors Elk River Guiding and Eldho’s Your Independent Grocer, and with door prizes from Tunnel 49 and Island Lake Lodge.
