Late this summer Fernie saw a string of thefts. It appeared the targets were construction vehicles filled with tools.

In some cases, it was vandalism rather than theft with a delivery truck having its fuel line cut and tank drained. The reality for business is this is expensive. The business bears the cost of replacing vehicles and tools, lost time, and increased stress. A group of businesses are working together to discuss the challenge and find solutions.

On Thursday, September 27, from 9 – 10 a.m., business owners and interested parties are invited to the Fernie Chamber of Commerce boardroom for an information session and discussion. The goals of the meeting are to learn about theft deterrent actions, what patterns the RCMP are seeing, and what technology can be used.

“An invitation to the RCMP to attend has been made and we are waiting their response. Some things we want to learn from the RCMP are effective ways to deter opportunistic theft and what precautions for measures can be taken to assist officers in recovering stolen property,” said Darren Hatina of D’s Drywall.

Another hot item for theft is mountain bikes. Our community if full of bikes worth more than my first car. Jay Carter from the Guide’s Hut will share information on tiles that can be placed in the frame of bikes making them easy to track.
