The City of Fernie issued an alert to residents Jan. 4 that in order to dispose of excessive amounts of water in the sanitary sewer collection system, it is necessary to temporarily discharge treated effluent to the Elk River.

The discharge began on Monday and is expected to continue until approximately Monday, February 15, in accordance with a Ministry of Environment operating permit.
