The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the May 28 City of Fernie council meeting.
PUBLIC HEARINGS
INFORMAL PUBLIC HEARING FOR DEVELOPMENT VARIANCE PERMIT APPLICATION DVPA-418
Council held an Informal Public Hearing for Development Variance Permit Application DVPA-418 and authorized the issuance of a development variance permit to vary the minimum front yard setback, maximum step, maximum eave, and maximum open porch projections. The variance will allow the applicant to construct a mudroom addition to the front of the house.

Council held an Informal Public Hearing for Development Variance Permit Application DVPA-419 and authorized the issuance of a development variance permit to vary the minimum front yard setback and maximum eave projection. PUBLIC HEARING FOR BYLAW NO. 2342, OFFICIAL COMMUNITY PLAN NO. 2231, AMENDMENT NO. 7 AND BYLAW NO. 2341, ZONING BYLAW NO. 1750, AMENDMENT BYLAW NO. 199
Council held a second Public Hearing and provided third reading to Bylaw No. 2342, Official Community Plan No. 2231, Amendment No. 7 and Bylaw No. 2341, Zoning Bylaw No. 1750, Amendment Bylaw No. 199. The proposed OCP and Bylaw amendments update the Official Community Plan and Zoning Bylaw to include the lands in West Fernie and amend the Flood Hazard Development Area Citywide.
STAFF REPORTS
DEVELOPMENT VARIANCE PERMIT NO. DVPA-420
Council approved the application and will consider a Development Variance Permit for side yard and front yard setbacks to allow for a renovation to the existing home, including a raised foundation and second-storey addition at 632-6th Avenue.
TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT EXPENSE POLICY
Council approved the Training and Development Expense Policy No. CP-2018-001.
MOUNT FERNIE PARK ROAD CONTRACT AWARD
Council approved the recommendation to award the paving contract for Mount Fernie Park Road to Power Paving in the amount of $179,035.00 exclusive of GST.
Council appointed Ms. Harmony Lloyd to the Fernie Youth Action Network Oversight Committee as the representative for Fernie Secondary School.
BYLAWS
BYLAW NO. 2352, WEST FERNIE SEWER AND WATER INFRASTRUCTURE UPGRADE PARCEL TAX BYLAW
Council adopted Bylaw No. 2352, which authorizes the City of Fernie to collect a parcel tax on all taxable parcels within West Fernie and recover the costs of providing upgraded water and sewer infrastructure as part of the amalgamation into the City of Fernie.
BYLAW NO. 2347, BUSINESS LICENCING AND REGULATION BYLAW MOBILE VENDING AMENDMENT
Council adopted Business Licencing and Regulation Bylaw No. 2347, 2018, which allows for the vending of retail goods, merchandise and wares in addition to food vending.
UPCOMING MEETINGS AND EVENTS
ORGANIC SOILS MANAGEMENT PLAN
The city is moving forward with a three-year pilot soil management project in an effort to improve soil health, better turf conditions and over the long term reduce the need for pesticides on city properties.
PUBLIC ART UNVEILING
The City of Fernie, along with artists Michael Hepher and Paul Reimer, welcomed the public to the official unveiling of “A Hardy Town” sculpture on June 1, at the Fernie Arts Station (pictured above).
UPCOMING PUBLIC HEARINGS
JUNE 11
A Public Hearing has been scheduled for June 11, to receive submissions from the public regarding Zoning Bylaw No. 1750, Amendment Bylaw No. 2345, 2018, which proposes to rezone 107 Whitetail Drive from R3 to R1SL.
