Fernie tragedy touches those farther afield
Yesterday’s tragic incident at the Fernie Memorial Arena has captured the attention of the country, and with it, the sympathies and prayers of many.
As emergency officials continue to try and sort out exactly what happened and the city grieves, B.C. Premier John Horgan and Minister of Labour Harry Bains reached out with some words for the community.
“Late yesterday afternoon, British Columbians were saddened to learn of three workplace fatalities in the community of Fernie. The circumstances surrounding the accident at the Fernie Memorial Arena are still under investigation and the community has declared a local state of emergency while HAZMAT teams address a suspected ammonia leak. WorkSafeBC, the BC Coroners Service and the Ministry of Environment are on scene.
“This is a tragic situation. Families and friends are grieving, and our hearts are with them. We send them our deepest condolences. We want to thank those who responded so quickly and valiantly, such as the Fernie Fire Department, Elk Valley RCMP and the BC Ambulance Service.
“Like every British Columbian, our thoughts are with the loved ones and the families of those involved and the entire close-knit community of Fernie.
“Neither workers nor their families should have to fear for their safety when they are on the job. Tragedies like this force us to underscore our commitment to ensure that B.C. families can rely on safe workplaces,” the senior government officials stated.
Kootenay-Columbia MP Wayne Stetski said he has reached out to City of Fernie Mayor Mary Giuliano “to offer her whatever assistance I can, both personally and working with the Federal Government.
“I am so sorry to hear about the three deaths resulting from the ammonia leak at the Fernie arena. My sincere condolences to the family and friends of those who died, and to the people of Fernie,” he said.
Mayor Giuliano noted on her Facebook page: “…There are completely sad days – hurting days like today. Know my thoughts and prayers are with many today. This is a small but very loving community and all the prayers and thoughts and offers of assistance are noted and greatly appreciated. What a great town you are. Most amazing wonderful people.”
