Impaired driver strikes cyclist near West Fernie

On Tuesday, July 12, at approximately 10 p.m., Elk Valley RCMP responded to an erratic driving complaint after a driver nearly struck several pedestrians in the area of Kikkoman Provincial Park.

Officers conducted patrols and located the suspect vehicle heading east bound on Highway 3, a short distance outside of West Fernie.

Before an officer had an opportunity to conduct a safety traffic stop, the suspect vehicle had collided with a cyclist on Hwy 3.

The Officer administered first aid to the cyclist while waiting for BC Emergency Health Services (EHS) to arrive.

The cyclist sustained severe injuries and was transported to the Elk Valley Hospital in Fernie and was later transported by STARS Air Ambulance to Foothills Hospital in Calgary, reported Cst. Debra Katerenchuk, Media Relations Officer for Elk Valley RCMP.

The male driver of the suspect vehicle was arrested for impaired driving.

It is unknown at this time the full extent of injuries to the male cyclist.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO-BC) will be asserting jurisdiction on this matter.

No names of the parties involved will be released at this time as the RCMP continue with its investigation.
