Firefighters respond to fuel spill in Jaffray
Members of the Jaffray Fire Department responded to a fuel spill at a commercial location in Jaffray this morning.
“When we arrived on scene we determined well over 2,000 litres of diesel fuel had escaped while being loaded into an above-ground tank,” explained Elk Valley & South Country Rural Fire & Rescue Deputy Chief Ben Goertzen.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we immediately evacuated the gas station, store and parking lot. As we are dealing with a flammable fuel, our firefighters will remain on site and ready to respond if needed.””
Firefighters have secured the scene and will remain on site until the spill has been fully cleaned up, which could be several more hours. A vac truck is also currently on site and a hazardous materials team is en route from Calgary to complete the clean up.
“We’d like to thank the owners and patrons of the gas station for their cooperation this afternoon,” added Goertzen.
Seven Jaffray firefighters and four apparatus initially responded to the call, and an additional crew from Elko is now on site to help provide relief throughout the clean up.
