Illegal dumper leaves mess at Tie Lake Transfer Station

One of the buckets that was smashed and left to drain all over the ground at the Tie Lake Transfer Station.

Yesterday (Nov. 15), Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) staff arrived at the Tie Lake Transfer Station to find a large amount of oil had been dumped in and around the metal pile.

Staff immediately contracted a contractor to begin remediation clean up.

“One litre of used oil can contaminate a million litres of fresh water. Seeing this abuse at our Transfer Station is frustrating, especially given there are safe, free places to deposit oil. This abuse costs every taxpayer in the Central Subregion – as we all pay for the clean up,” the RDEK stated on its Facebook page this morning.

If you know who may have been responsible, please let the regional government know. You can contact RDEK Solid Waste Superintendent Jim Penson at [email protected] or 1-888-478-7335.
