Road work continues in Baynes Lake area

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting is advising Baynes Lake townsite community residents and businesses of base repair, culvert replacement, overlay paving and shoulder repairs coming to area roadways.

Preparatory ground works started the week of July 18 and should be completed by end of July. Paving activities are scheduled to start in late August or September.

The following list of locations shows where works are planned. In consultation with the province, the consideration of priority was determined by factors such as asphalt condition and expected traffic volume. Some locations will be repaved under supervision of Mainroad East Kootenay, while other locations will be completed under supervision of the Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure:

“Many asphalt and sealcoat surfaced roads in the area are at the end of their service life. In some locations, the road base and culverts in the area have also reached the end of their service life, and are no longer in acceptable condition. By making these repairs now, we are able to ensure that the repair materials used are up to current Ministry of Transportation standards,” Mainroad explained.

“The groundwork (base repair and culverts) at identified failure sites will be completed prior to paving so that we do not have to pull up the new asphalt to make ground repairs later.

After the asphalt has been laid, we will use crush gravel to build up the road shoulder. A properly built shoulder is important for safety and proper drainage, and helps ensure the longevity of the pavement.”

What should I expect/ what do I need to do to prepare?

  • Exposed gravel: in areas where road base and culvert repair is performed, there will be a gravel surface left until the road is paved. Our crews have installed construction signage to mark these locations until paving is completed. Please use appropriate caution, especially when driving bicycles or motorcycles.
  • Heavy equipment: excavators, backhoes, pavers, packers and large dump trucks.
  • Noise: yes, there will be noise, but minimized by planning the noisier activities mid-day.
  • Dust: there may be some dust while work is ongoing.
  • Benefit: Improved drainage, drivability, traction, longevity, appearance, and safety.
  • Parking: please ensure your vehicles are not parked on the road while construction is underway.
  • Delays: plan for minor delays while work is ongoing; allow extra time for your commute.

Emergency vehicles will be allowed access at all times, as will access to your driveway. Please follow direction of the traffic control personnel.
